Unit History

2 Bombardment Group 1914–1921 (World War I) The 2nd Bombardment Group was first organized as the 1st Day Bombardment Group on 10 September 1918 at Amanty Airdrome, France. Assigned to the First Army Air Service, the group participated in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives, conducting daylight bombing missions against enemy troop concentrations, supply depots, and transportation networks. Following the Armistice, the group returned to the United States and was demobilized in June 1919. 1922–1939 (Interwar Period) Reconstituted and organized as the 2nd Bombardment Group in 1921, the unit became a key component of the Army Air Corps’ developing bombardment doctrine. Stationed at Langley Field, Virginia, the group participated in numerous training exercises and aerial demonstrations, including the notable 1921 bombing tests against captured German warships. Throughout the interwar years, the 2nd Bombardment Group contributed to the evolution of strategic bombing concepts and the development of new aircraft. 1940–1947 (World War II) Activated for wartime service, the 2nd Bombardment Group was equipped with B-17 Flying Fortresses and deployed to the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. Assigned to the Fifteenth Air Force, the group conducted strategic bombing missions against Axis industrial targets, oil refineries, and transportation hubs across Italy, Germany, Austria, and the Balkans. The group participated in major campaigns including Rome-Arno, Normandy, Northern France, Southern France, North Apennines, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Po Valley. The 2nd Bombardment Group was inactivated in Italy on 28 February 1946.
