Unit History
The 16th Tank Battalion was constituted on 21 August 1940 in the Regular Army as Company C, 2d Armored Regiment, an element of the 3d Armored Division. It was activated on 15 April 1941 at Camp Beauregard, Louisiana. The unit was reorganized and redesignated on 8 January 1942 as Company C, 32d Armored Regiment. On 1 October 1943, it was again reorganized and redesignated as Company C, 32d Tank Battalion. Following World War II, the unit was inactivated on 10 November 1945 in Germany. It was later redesignated on 7 July 1947 as Company C, 16th Tank Battalion, and activated on 15 July 1947 at Fort Knox, Kentucky. The battalion underwent several activations and inactivations during the Cold War period, reflecting the changing needs of the U.S. Army’s armored forces.
