85th Infantry Regiment 1940–1947 (World War II) The 85th Infantry Regiment was constituted on 10 July 1943 in the Army of the United States and activated on 15 July 1943 at Camp Hale, Colorado, as part of the 10th Mountain Division. The regiment trained extensively in mountain and winter warfare, preparing for operations in rugged terrain. In early 1945, the 85th Infantry deployed to Italy, where it participated in the North Apennines and Po Valley campaigns. The regiment played a significant role in breaking through German defensive positions in the Apennine Mountains and advancing into the Po Valley, contributing to the final Allied victory in Italy. Following the end of hostilities, the regiment was inactivated on 30 November 1945 at Camp Carson, Colorado.
