Unit History

The 104th Infantry Regiment was originally organized in 1639 as part of the Massachusetts Militia, making it one of the oldest military units in the United States. It was officially designated as the 104th Infantry Regiment in 1917, when it was assigned to the 26th Division (Yankee Division) during World War I. The regiment distinguished itself in combat during the war, particularly in the Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne campaigns. For its actions at Apremont, France, in April 1918, the regiment was awarded the French Croix de Guerre, becoming the first American unit to receive this honor. During World War II, the 104th Infantry Regiment was again mobilized as part of the 26th Infantry Division. The regiment participated in the Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe campaigns. After the war, the regiment continued to serve as part of the Massachusetts Army National Guard, undergoing several reorganizations and redesignations in the postwar period.
