104th Infantry Regiment 1914–1921 (World War I) The 104th Infantry Regiment, originally part of the Massachusetts National Guard, was federalized for service in World War I and assigned to the 26th "Yankee" Division. The regiment distinguished itself in combat, particularly during the fighting at Apremont in April 1918, where it became the first American unit to receive the French Croix de Guerre for gallantry. The 104th participated in several major campaigns, including Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne, before returning to the United States and being demobilized in 1919. 1922–1939 (Interwar Period) Following World War I, the 104th Infantry Regiment was reorganized as part of the Massachusetts National Guard and continued its service within the 26th Infantry Division. During the interwar years, the regiment focused on training and maintaining readiness, participating in annual maneuvers and supporting state and federal missions. 1940–1947 (World War II) The 104th Infantry Regiment was inducted into federal service on 16 January 1941 as part of the 26th Infantry Division. After training in the United States, the regiment deployed to the European Theater, landing in France in September 1944. The 104th participated in the Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe campaigns, engaging in significant combat operations including the Battle of the Bulge. The regiment was inactivated in December 1945 following the end of hostilities.
