The 7th Army was activated on 10 July 1943 during World War II under the command of Lieutenant General George S. Patton, Jr. It was initially formed to lead the Allied invasion of Sicily, known as Operation Husky. Following the successful campaign in Sicily, the 7th Army participated in the invasion of southern France (Operation Dragoon) in August 1944. The unit advanced through France and into Germany, playing a significant role in the liberation of several cities and the defeat of Axis forces in Western Europe. After the war, the 7th Army remained in Germany as part of the occupation forces and later became a key component of the United States Army Europe during the Cold War.
