Unit History

7th Army 1940–1947 (World War II) The 7th Army was activated on 10 July 1943 in North Africa under the command of Lieutenant General George S. Patton, Jr. It played a pivotal role in the Allied invasion of Sicily (Operation Husky), leading the western task force and capturing Palermo before advancing to Messina. After Sicily, the 7th Army participated in the invasion of southern France (Operation Dragoon) in August 1944, advancing rapidly up the Rhône Valley and liberating key cities. The army continued its advance into Germany, participating in the capture of Nuremberg and Munich. Following the end of hostilities in Europe, the 7th Army served as an occupation force before being inactivated in March 1946. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) Reactivated in 1950 in Stuttgart, Germany, the 7th Army became the principal U.S. Army formation in Europe during the early Cold War. It was responsible for the defense of Western Europe and the training and integration of U.S. forces stationed in Germany, playing a central role in NATO’s deterrence posture throughout the 1950s. 1958–1980 (Cold War / Vietnam Era) Throughout the Cold War, the 7th Army remained the primary U.S. Army headquarters in Europe, overseeing multiple corps and divisions. It was instrumental in maintaining readiness and conducting large-scale exercises in support of NATO, adapting to evolving threats and technological advancements until its headquarters was merged with U.S. Army Europe in 1966.
