Unit History

315th Cavalry Regiment 1914–1921 (World War I) The 315th Cavalry Regiment was constituted on 18 May 1917 in the National Army and organized on 30 March 1918 at Fort D.A. Russell, Wyoming. The regiment was short-lived in its original form; on 19 August 1918, it was broken up to form the 71st and 72nd Field Artillery Regiments and the 24th Trench Mortar Battery. These artillery units were demobilized in early 1919 following the end of World War I. 1922–1939 (Interwar Period) The regiment was reconstituted on 15 October 1921 in the Organized Reserves as the 315th Cavalry Regiment and assigned to the 64th Cavalry Division. It was organized in January 1922 with headquarters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During the interwar years, the regiment conducted training and participated in annual summer encampments, supporting the Army’s reserve cavalry structure. The 315th Cavalry Regiment remained active in this capacity until it was converted and redesignated as the 315th Mechanized Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron on 30 January 1942.
