Unit History

The 323rd Cavalry Regiment was constituted in the National Army on 18 May 1917 as the 323rd Cavalry and assigned to the 162nd Cavalry Brigade, 81st Division. The regiment was organized in 1918 at Camp Dodge, Iowa. Following World War I, the unit was demobilized on 18 February 1919. It was reconstituted in the Organized Reserve on 15 October 1921 and assigned to the Eighth Corps Area, with headquarters at Dallas, Texas. The regiment was inactivated on 30 January 1942 and converted into the 549th Signal Aircraft Warning Regiment as part of the Army’s reorganization during World War II.
