Unit History

312th Cavalry Regiment 1914–1921 (World War I) The 312th Cavalry Regiment was constituted in the National Army on 18 May 1917 and organized at Camp Stanley, Texas, in 1918. During World War I, the regiment was broken up shortly after organization, with its personnel used to form the 67th and 68th Field Artillery Regiments and the 22nd Trench Mortar Battery. These artillery units served stateside and did not see overseas combat. The regiment was demobilized in early 1919 following the end of the war. 1922–1939 (Interwar Period) Reconstituted in the Organized Reserve on 15 October 1921, the 312th Cavalry Regiment was assigned to the 63rd Cavalry Division and headquartered in Texas. The regiment conducted regular training and participated in annual summer encampments, supporting the Army’s reserve cavalry structure during the interwar years. It remained a reserve unit throughout this period, focusing on readiness and mobilization planning. 1940–1947 (World War II) The 312th Cavalry Regiment was converted and redesignated as the 549th Signal Aircraft Warning Regiment on 30 January 1942, reflecting the Army’s shift away from horse cavalry to more modern roles during World War II. The regiment’s lineage as a cavalry unit ended with this conversion, and it did not serve as a cavalry formation during the war.
