Unit History

30th Infantry Regiment 1914–1921 (World War I) The 30th Infantry Regiment was constituted on 2 February 1917 in the Regular Army and organized on 1 June 1917 at Camp Syracuse, New York. Assigned to the 3rd Division, the regiment deployed to France as part of the American Expeditionary Forces. It participated in major campaigns including Aisne, Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, Champagne 1918, and Lorraine 1918. The regiment distinguished itself during the Second Battle of the Marne and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Following the Armistice, the regiment returned to the United States and was stationed at various posts during the interwar period. 1940–1947 (World War II) During World War II, the 30th Infantry Regiment remained assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division. The regiment participated in the North African Campaign, landing in Morocco during Operation Torch in November 1942. It subsequently fought in the Sicily Campaign, the Italian Campaign—including the landings at Anzio and the liberation of Rome—and later took part in the invasion of Southern France. The regiment advanced through France and Germany, participating in campaigns such as Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. The 30th Infantry Regiment earned numerous unit citations and campaign honors for its distinguished service. Following the end of hostilities, the regiment was inactivated on 20 August 1946 in Germany. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 30th Infantry Regiment was reactivated on 1 August 1946 at Fort Benning, Georgia, and continued to serve as part of the 3rd Infantry Division. During the Korean War, the regiment deployed to Korea and participated in major campaigns including the UN Defensive, UN Offensive, CCF Intervention, First UN Counteroffensive, CCF Spring Offensive, UN Summer-Fall Offensive, Second Korean Winter, Korea Summer-Fall 1952, Third Korean Winter, and Korea Summer 1953. The regiment earned additional honors for its actions during the conflict. After the armistice, the regiment remained active as part of the U.S. Army’s forward presence in Korea and Europe. 1958–1980 (Cold War / Vietnam Era) Throughout the Cold War, the 30th Infantry Regiment continued to serve with the 3rd Infantry Division, stationed in Europe as part of NATO forces. The regiment maintained readiness and participated in numerous training exercises and maneuvers, supporting U.S. commitments to collective defense in Europe. The regiment did not deploy as a unit to Vietnam but contributed personnel and expertise to the broader Army mission during this era. 1980–Present (Post-Vietnam / GWOT) The 30th Infantry Regiment’s lineage continues as part of the 3rd Infantry Division. Elements of the regiment have participated in operations during the Global War on Terror, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. The regiment remains an integral part of the Army’s infantry forces, upholding its legacy of service in major conflicts and ongoing operations.
