28th Infantry Regiment 1914–1921 (World War I) The 28th Infantry Regiment, originally constituted in 1901, was assigned to the 1st Division during World War I. The regiment deployed to France as part of the American Expeditionary Forces and participated in major campaigns including Cantigny, Soissons, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne. The 28th Infantry earned distinction for its actions at Cantigny, the first major American offensive of the war, and continued to serve with distinction throughout the conflict. Following the Armistice, the regiment remained in Europe as part of the occupation forces before returning to the United States. 1940–1947 (World War II) During World War II, the 28th Infantry Regiment was assigned to the 8th Infantry Division. The regiment landed in Normandy in July 1944 and participated in the Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe campaigns. The 28th Infantry played a significant role in the liberation of France and the advance into Germany, including the crossing of the Elbe River. The regiment was inactivated in Germany in November 1945 following the end of hostilities. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 28th Infantry Regiment was reactivated in 1947 and continued to serve as part of the 8th Infantry Division during the early Cold War period. The regiment was stationed in Germany as part of the U.S. Army’s commitment to NATO and European defense. It did not deploy to Korea as a regimental unit but contributed to the Army’s overall readiness during this era. 1958–1980 (Cold War / Vietnam Era) The regiment underwent several reorganizations during the Cold War, including assignments to various divisions and deployments in support of NATO operations in Europe. Elements of the 28th Infantry Regiment served in Vietnam, where they participated in multiple campaigns and earned commendations for their actions. The regiment’s service during this period reflected the evolving nature of U.S. Army operations during the Cold War. 1980–Present (Post-Vietnam / GWOT) The 28th Infantry Regiment continues to serve as part of the U.S. Army, with battalions assigned to various divisions over the years. Elements of the regiment have deployed in support of operations in the Balkans, Iraq, and Afghanistan, earning campaign participation credit and maintaining a tradition of service in major conflicts and peacekeeping missions.
