22nd Infantry Division (Phantom) 1940–1947 (World War II) The 22nd Infantry Division was a "phantom" unit created as part of the Allied deception operations during World War II. It existed only on paper and was never an actual combat formation. The division was used in various deception plans, including Operation Fortitude, to mislead German intelligence about the strength and disposition of Allied forces in the European Theater. The notional division contributed to the overall success of Allied deception efforts by simulating radio traffic, administrative activity, and other indicators of a real unit, thereby helping to conceal the true locations and intentions of Allied armies. The 22nd Infantry Division was never activated or deployed, and it was disbanded after the war as the need for such deception units ended.
