Unit History

2nd Infantry Regiment 1940–1947 (World War II) The 2nd Infantry Regiment, with a lineage dating back to the early 19th century, was an active component of the U.S. Army during World War II. Assigned to the 5th Infantry Division, the regiment was reactivated on 16 October 1939 at Fort McClellan, Alabama. During the war, the 2nd Infantry Regiment participated in major campaigns in the European Theater, including the Normandy landings, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. The regiment distinguished itself in combat operations across France, Luxembourg, Germany, and Czechoslovakia. Following the end of hostilities, the regiment was inactivated on 20 September 1946 at Camp Campbell, Kentucky. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 2nd Infantry Regiment was reactivated on 15 July 1947 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, as part of the postwar Army reorganization. During the Korean War era, the regiment remained stateside, serving primarily in a training and readiness capacity. It continued to uphold its traditions and prepare soldiers for overseas deployment, though it did not deploy as a regimental unit to Korea during this period.
