111th Infantry Regiment 1914–1921 (World War I) The 111th Infantry Regiment was organized in 1917 from elements of the Pennsylvania National Guard and assigned to the 28th Division. The regiment was federalized for service in World War I, deploying to France as part of the American Expeditionary Forces. The 111th Infantry participated in major campaigns including the Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, Oise-Aisne, Meuse-Argonne, and Champagne 1918 offensives. Following the Armistice, the regiment returned to the United States and was demobilized in May 1919. 1922–1939 (Interwar Period) Reconstituted in the Pennsylvania National Guard, the 111th Infantry Regiment was federally recognized in the early 1920s. During the interwar years, the regiment remained assigned to the 28th Division, conducting annual training and maintaining readiness for federal and state missions. 1940–1947 (World War II) The 111th Infantry Regiment was inducted into federal service on 17 February 1941 as part of the 28th Infantry Division. During World War II, the regiment served in the European Theater, participating in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe campaigns. The 111th Infantry played a significant role in the liberation of France and the advance into Germany. The regiment was inactivated on 22 November 1945 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, following the end of hostilities.
