Unit History
The 49 Division Artillery was the artillery component of the British 49th (West Riding) Infantry Division. The division was originally formed in 1908 as part of the Territorial Force and served in both World War I and World War II. During the First World War, the division, including its artillery units, saw action on the Western Front, participating in major battles such as the Battle of the Somme and the Third Battle of Ypres. In the Second World War, the 49th Division was mobilized in 1939 and served in Iceland before taking part in the Normandy Campaign following D-Day in 1944. The division’s artillery provided crucial fire support during operations in North-West Europe, including the liberation of the Netherlands and the advance into Germany. The division was disbanded after the end of the war.
