40 Tank Company 1940–1947 (World War II) The 40 Tank Company was a unit of the Illinois National Guard, federally recognized prior to World War II. In 1940, as part of the U.S. Army’s prewar mobilization, the company was inducted into federal service and redesignated as Company D, 192nd Tank Battalion. The 192nd Tank Battalion, including the former 40 Tank Company, was deployed to the Philippines in late 1941. The battalion fought in the defense of Bataan following the Japanese invasion, enduring intense combat and suffering heavy losses. Many members of the unit became prisoners of war following the fall of Bataan in April 1942, enduring the Bataan Death March and subsequent captivity. The unit was inactivated following the end of World War II.
