34th Infantry Regiment 1914–1921 (World War I) The 34th Infantry Regiment was constituted on 1 July 1916 in the Regular Army and organized at El Paso, Texas. During World War I, the regiment served as part of the 7th Division and deployed to France in 1918. The 34th Infantry participated in the Lorraine campaign, primarily serving in reserve and performing occupation duties following the Armistice. The regiment returned to the United States and was stationed at various posts during the postwar drawdown. 1940–1947 (World War II) During World War II, the 34th Infantry Regiment was assigned to the 24th Infantry Division. The regiment was stationed in Hawaii at the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and subsequently participated in the defense of the islands. The 34th Infantry later took part in the New Guinea campaign, including the landings at Hollandia, and fought in the Philippines during the Leyte and Luzon campaigns. The regiment earned campaign participation credit for its actions in the Pacific Theater. Following the end of hostilities, the 34th Infantry Regiment was inactivated in Japan in 1947. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 34th Infantry Regiment was reactivated and served with the 24th Infantry Division during the early Cold War period. The regiment deployed to Korea at the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, participating in the defense of the Pusan Perimeter, the breakout from Pusan, and subsequent operations throughout the conflict. The regiment remained active in Korea until the armistice and continued to serve as part of the U.S. Army’s forward presence in the region during the postwar years.
