21st Infantry Regiment 1940–1947 (World War II) The 21st Infantry Regiment, originally constituted in 1861, was an active component of the U.S. Army during World War II. Assigned to the 24th Infantry Division, the regiment participated in the Pacific Theater, including campaigns in New Guinea, Leyte, and Luzon. The regiment distinguished itself in amphibious assaults and jungle warfare, contributing significantly to the Allied advance in the Southwest Pacific. Following the end of hostilities, the 21st Infantry Regiment was inactivated in Japan in 1947. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) Reactivated in 1949, the 21st Infantry Regiment was stationed in Japan as part of the U.S. occupation forces. At the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950, the regiment became the first American ground unit to engage North Korean forces, notably fighting in the Battle of Osan. The regiment remained active in Korea until the armistice and continued to serve as part of the 24th Infantry Division during the early Cold War period. 1958–1980 (Cold War / Vietnam Era) During the Cold War, the 21st Infantry Regiment underwent several reorganizations and continued to serve with the 24th Infantry Division. Elements of the regiment were deployed to Germany as part of NATO commitments, maintaining readiness during heightened tensions with the Soviet Union. The regiment did not deploy as a unit to Vietnam but contributed personnel and support to the conflict. 1980–Present (Post-Vietnam / GWOT) The 21st Infantry Regiment remains an active component of the U.S. Army, with battalions assigned to various divisions over time, including the 25th Infantry Division.
