Unit History

17th Infantry Regiment 1914–1921 (World War I) The 17th Infantry Regiment, originally constituted in 1861, served with distinction during World War I. Assigned to the 11th Division, the regiment was mobilized in 1918 but did not see combat before the Armistice. The unit returned to the United States and was demobilized following the end of hostilities. 1940–1947 (World War II) During World War II, the 17th Infantry Regiment was assigned to the 7th Infantry Division. The regiment participated in major campaigns in the Pacific Theater, including the Aleutian Islands, Kwajalein, Leyte, and Okinawa. The 17th Infantry played a significant role in the amphibious assaults and subsequent ground operations, earning campaign participation credit for its actions. Following the end of the war, the regiment was inactivated in Japan in 1949. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) Reactivated for service during the Korean War, the 17th Infantry Regiment again served with the 7th Infantry Division. The regiment participated in key operations, including the Inchon landing, the advance to the Yalu River, and defensive actions during Chinese offensives. The unit earned multiple campaign streamers and distinguished itself in combat before the armistice in 1953. After the war, the regiment remained active as part of the U.S. Army’s forward presence in Korea. 1958–1980 (Cold War / Vietnam Era) Throughout the Cold War, the 17th Infantry Regiment continued to serve as part of the 7th Infantry Division, stationed in Korea and later at various posts in the United States. The regiment maintained readiness for potential conflict and participated in training exercises and deterrence missions during this period. 1980–Present (Post-Vietnam / GWOT) The 17th Infantry Regiment’s lineage continues in the modern era, with battalions serving in various capacities, including deployments in support of the Global War on Terror. Elements of the regiment have participated in operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, upholding the unit’s long tradition of service.
