22nd Infantry Regiment 1940–1947 (World War II) The 22nd Infantry Regiment, originally constituted in 1861, was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division during World War II. The regiment was activated at Fort Benning, Georgia, and participated in the Normandy landings on D-Day, 6 June 1944. It fought through the hedgerows of Normandy, advanced across France, and was involved in the liberation of Paris. The regiment continued its advance into Belgium and Germany, participating in the Battle of the Bulge and the crossing of the Rhine. The 22nd Infantry Regiment earned campaign participation credit for Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. Following the end of hostilities, the regiment was inactivated on 20 February 1946 in Germany. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The regiment was reactivated on 15 July 1947 at Fort Ord, California, as part of the 4th Infantry Division. During the Korean War era, the 22nd Infantry Regiment remained stateside, serving as a training and readiness unit. It did not deploy to Korea as a regimental unit but contributed to the Army’s overall preparedness during the early Cold War period. 1958–1980 (Cold War / Vietnam Era) In 1957, the regiment was reorganized under the Combat Arms Regimental System. Elements of the 22nd Infantry Regiment were later deployed to Vietnam, where they participated in major operations including the Tet Offensive and the Cambodian Campaign. The regiment earned numerous campaign credits and decorations for its service in Vietnam, reflecting its continued operational significance during the Cold War. 1980–Present (Post-Vietnam / GWOT) The 22nd Infantry Regiment’s lineage continues through its battalions, which have served in various capacities including peacekeeping missions and deployments in support of the Global War on Terror. Elements of the regiment have participated in operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, maintaining a legacy of service that spans more than a century.
