19th Corps 1861–1865 (American Civil War) The XIX Corps was a corps of the Union Army during the American Civil War, organized on December 14, 1862, under the command of Major General Nathaniel P. Banks. The corps was primarily composed of troops from the Department of the Gulf and played a significant role in the Union’s operations along the Gulf Coast and in the lower Mississippi Valley. The XIX Corps participated in the Siege of Port Hudson, one of the longest sieges in American military history, which resulted in the surrender of the last Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River in July 1863. The corps also took part in the Red River Campaign in 1864, an unsuccessful Union attempt to invade northern Louisiana. Later, elements of the XIX Corps were transferred to the Shenandoah Valley, where they fought under Major General Philip Sheridan in the Valley Campaigns of 1864.
