Unit History

The 18th Engineer Battalion was first constituted on 29 July 1921 in the Organized Reserves as the 2d Battalion, 36th Engineers. It was redesignated on 1 January 1938 as the 2d Battalion, 36th Engineer Regiment. The unit was activated on 1 June 1941 at Camp Bowie, Texas, and later reorganized and redesignated on 1 August 1942 as the 18th Engineer Battalion. During World War II, the battalion participated in several campaigns, including Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. After the war, the battalion was inactivated on 20 October 1945 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. It was later reactivated and has since served in various conflicts, including the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm, and Operation Iraqi Freedom, providing combat engineering support in construction, mobility, and countermobility operations.
