20th Field Artillery Regiment 1940–1947 (World War II) The 20th Field Artillery Regiment was originally constituted in the Regular Army in 1916 and has a lineage that includes service in both World Wars. During World War II, the regiment was reorganized and redesignated as the 20th Field Artillery Battalion. It was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division and participated in major campaigns in the European Theater, including the Normandy landings, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. The battalion provided critical artillery support throughout these operations, contributing to the division’s advance across France and into Germany. Following the end of hostilities, the 20th Field Artillery Battalion was inactivated on 12 February 1946 at Camp Butner, North Carolina. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 20th Field Artillery Battalion was reactivated on 15 July 1947 at Fort Ord, California, as part of the 4th Infantry Division. During the early Cold War period, the battalion remained stateside, focusing on training and readiness. It did not deploy to Korea as a unit but continued to support the division’s peacetime missions until it was inactivated on 1 April 1957 in Germany.
