Unit History

181st Infantry Regiment 1940–1947 (World War II) The 181st Infantry Regiment, tracing its lineage to the Massachusetts militia, was inducted into federal service on 16 January 1941 as part of the 26th Infantry Division. During World War II, the regiment was initially assigned to coastal defense duties in the northeastern United States. In 1943, the regiment was relieved from the 26th Division and assigned to various training and security roles within the continental United States. The 181st Infantry did not deploy overseas as a regiment during the war. It was inactivated on 31 August 1945 at Camp Myles Standish, Massachusetts. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The regiment was reorganized and federally recognized on 15 April 1947 as part of the Massachusetts Army National Guard. During the Korean War era, the 181st Infantry remained stateside, fulfilling training and readiness responsibilities but was not mobilized for overseas service as a regimental unit.
