XVI Corps 1940–1947 (World War II) The XVI Corps was first constituted on 1 October 1933 in the Organized Reserves but was not activated until 7 December 1943 at Fort Riley, Kansas. During World War II, the corps was assigned to the Ninth Army and deployed to the European Theater of Operations. The XVI Corps played a significant role in the final campaigns of the war, including operations in the Rhineland and Central Europe. The corps commanded several divisions during the advance into Germany and was instrumental in the capture of key cities such as Duisburg and Düsseldorf. Following the end of hostilities, the XVI Corps was inactivated on 7 December 1945 in Germany. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The XVI Corps was reactivated in the Organized Reserve Corps on 22 November 1950, with headquarters at Omaha, Nebraska. During the early Cold War period, the corps was responsible for training and overseeing reserve units in its area of responsibility.
