1 Machine Gun Squadron 1914–1921 (World War I) The 1 Machine Gun Squadron was constituted during World War I as part of the U.S. Army’s efforts to modernize and expand its combat capabilities. Organized in 1917, the squadron was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division and served as its dedicated machine gun unit. The squadron trained extensively in the United States but did not deploy overseas before the Armistice. Following the end of World War I, the 1 Machine Gun Squadron was demobilized in 1919 as part of the postwar reduction of forces.
