Unit History

1 Allied Airborne Army 1940–1947 (World War II) The 1st Allied Airborne Army was activated on 2 August 1944 in England as a combined command of American, British, and Polish airborne forces under the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF). Its formation was intended to coordinate large-scale airborne operations in Western Europe. The Army oversaw major operations including Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands, which aimed to secure key bridges and facilitate a rapid Allied advance into Germany. Despite initial successes, Market Garden ultimately failed to achieve its strategic objectives. The 1st Allied Airborne Army also played a significant role in Operation Varsity, the airborne crossing of the Rhine River in March 1945, which was the largest single-day airborne operation in history and contributed to the final defeat of Nazi Germany. The Army was inactivated in May 1945 following the end of hostilities in Europe. References (AMA) Wikipedia contributors.
