Unit History

The 1st Engineer Regiment was originally constituted in the United States Army as the 1st Battalion of Engineers on 31 December 1861. It was organized at Washington, D.C., and participated in numerous campaigns during the American Civil War, including the Peninsula, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Petersburg campaigns. Following the Civil War, the unit continued to serve in various capacities, including construction and fortification duties during peacetime. The regiment was redesignated as the 1st Engineer Regiment on 7 June 1916. During World War I, the regiment served in France and participated in several major campaigns, including Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and Champagne 1918. In World War II, the 1st Engineer Regiment was involved in the North African and European Theaters, participating in campaigns such as Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe.
