887 Field Artillery Battalion 1940–1947 (World War II) The 887th Field Artillery Battalion was constituted on 23 November 1942 in the Army of the United States and activated on 15 December 1942 at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma. The battalion was equipped as a 155mm howitzer unit and trained extensively before deploying to the European Theater of Operations. During World War II, the 887th participated in the Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns, providing critical artillery support to advancing Allied forces. Following the end of hostilities, the battalion was inactivated on 27 January 1946 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey.
