8th Infantry Regiment 1940–1947 (World War II) The 8th Infantry Regiment, originally constituted in 1838, was an active component of the U.S. Army during World War II. Assigned to the 4th Infantry Division, the regiment was activated for wartime service and participated in several major campaigns in the European Theater. The 8th Infantry landed on Utah Beach during the Normandy invasion on D-Day, 6 June 1944, and played a significant role in the liberation of France. The regiment continued its advance through Northern France, the Rhineland, the Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe, earning campaign participation credit for each. Following the end of hostilities, the regiment was inactivated on 21 February 1946 at Camp Butner, North Carolina. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 8th Infantry Regiment was reactivated on 15 July 1947 at Fort Ord, California, as part of the postwar reorganization of the Army. During the early Cold War period, the regiment remained assigned to the 4th Infantry Division and focused on training and readiness missions within the continental United States. The unit did not deploy to Korea as a regimental entity but contributed to the Army’s overall preparedness during this era. 1958–1980 (Cold War / Vietnam Era) Under the Combat Arms Regimental System, the 8th Infantry Regiment’s lineage was perpetuated by its battalions, which continued to serve with the 4th Infantry Division. Elements of the regiment deployed to Vietnam, where they participated in numerous campaigns, including the Tet Counteroffensive and the Sanctuary Counteroffensive. The regiment’s battalions earned distinction for their combat actions and continued to serve as a key component of the division throughout the Cold War. 1980–Present (Post-Vietnam / GWOT) The 8th Infantry Regiment’s battalions have remained active in various configurations, supporting both training and operational missions. Elements of the regiment have deployed in support of the Global War on Terror, including operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, continuing the unit’s long tradition of service.
