Unit History

8th Infantry Division 1940–1947 (World War II) The 8th Infantry Division was reactivated on 1 July 1940 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, as part of the U.S. Army’s prewar expansion. After extensive training, the division deployed to Europe in December 1943. Assigned to the First Army, the 8th Infantry Division landed on Utah Beach in July 1944 and participated in the Normandy Campaign. The division advanced through France, fighting in the Brittany Peninsula, and later took part in the liberation of Brest. It continued its advance across France, Belgium, and into Germany, participating in the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe campaigns. The division ended the war in Germany and was inactivated on 20 November 1945 at Camp Leonard Wood, Missouri. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 8th Infantry Division was reactivated on 17 August 1946 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, as part of the postwar Army structure. In 1950, the division was reorganized as a training division and later deployed to West Germany in 1956 as part of NATO forces, where it assumed a key role in the defense of Western Europe during the early Cold War period. 1958–1980 (Cold War / Vietnam Era) Throughout the Cold War, the 8th Infantry Division was stationed in West Germany, serving as a major component of U.S. Army Europe. The division was a mechanized infantry formation, participating in numerous NATO exercises and maintaining readiness as a deterrent against Warsaw Pact aggression. It did not deploy to Vietnam as a division, but individual soldiers and smaller units were sent as replacements. 1980–Present (Post-Vietnam / GWOT) The 8th Infantry Division continued its mission in Germany until it was inactivated on 17 January 1992 following the end of the Cold War and the reduction of U.S. forces in Europe. The division’s legacy is preserved through its campaign participation and contributions to NATO defense during the latter half of the 20th century.
