During World War I, the regiment was assigned to the 3rd Division and deployed to France as part of the American Expeditionary Forces. The 6th Engineers participated in major campaigns including Aisne, Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, Champagne 1918, and Lorraine 1918. The regiment provided critical combat engineering support, including constructing bridges, fortifications, and clearing obstacles under fire. Following the Armistice, the regiment returned to the United States and was stationed at Camp Pike, Arkansas. 1922–1939 (Interwar Period) During the interwar years, the 6th Engineer Regiment remained active as part of the Regular Army, continuing its association with the 3rd Division. The regiment participated in training exercises and maintained readiness for potential mobilization, contributing to the development of modern combat engineering doctrine. 1940–1947 (World War II) The 6th Engineer Regiment was reorganized and redesignated as the 6th Engineer Combat Regiment on 1 August 1942. Assigned to the 6th Infantry Division, the regiment deployed to the Pacific Theater, where it participated in campaigns in New Guinea, Luzon, and the Southern Philippines. The regiment’s engineers were instrumental in overcoming challenging terrain, constructing roads and bridges, and supporting infantry operations against Japanese forces. After the end of hostilities, the regiment was inactivated on 10 January 1949 in Korea.
