The 21st Field Artillery Battalion was originally constituted on 1 July 1916 in the Regular Army as Battery B, 21st Field Artillery. It was organized on 1 June 1917 at Camp Wilson, Texas. The unit was assigned to the 5th Division on 12 December 1917 and participated in World War I campaigns, including St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne. After the war, the unit was inactivated on 2 September 1921 at Camp Bragg, North Carolina. It was later reactivated and underwent several reorganizations and redesignations, becoming the 21st Field Artillery Battalion on 1 October 1940. During World War II, the battalion served in the European Theater, participating in campaigns such as Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe.
