109th Cavalry Regiment 1922–1939 (Interwar Period) The 109th Cavalry Regiment was constituted in the Georgia National Guard on 1 June 1921 and organized between 1921 and 1922 with headquarters at Atlanta. It was assigned to the 23rd Cavalry Division and served as a traditional horse cavalry unit during the interwar years, participating in annual training and state duties. The regiment remained active in the Georgia National Guard until it was converted and redesignated as the 101st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Mechanized, on 1 November 1940, as part of the Army’s transition to mechanized forces in anticipation of World War II.
