The 109th Cavalry Regiment was originally constituted in the National Guard as the 109th Cavalry on 1 June 1921 and assigned to the 23rd Cavalry Division. The regiment was organized between 1921 and 1922 in Georgia and federally recognized on 29 September 1922 with headquarters at Atlanta. The 109th Cavalry conducted training and participated in various maneuvers during the interwar period. On 30 September 1940, the regiment was relieved from the 23rd Cavalry Division and converted and redesignated as the 101st Antitank Battalion. The unit was later inducted into federal service on 16 September 1940 at Atlanta, Georgia, and served during World War II in its new role.
