The 102nd Cavalry Regiment was originally constituted in the New Jersey National Guard as the 1st Cavalry on 29 March 1913. It was organized and federally recognized on 29 June 1916 at Newark, New Jersey. The unit was redesignated as the 102nd Cavalry Regiment on 1 October 1917 and assigned to the 21st Cavalry Division. During World War I, the regiment was broken up and its elements were reorganized and redesignated as the 104th Train Headquarters and Military Police and the 117th Trench Mortar Battery, both elements of the 29th Division. After the war, the unit was reconstituted and consolidated with the 1st Cavalry, New Jersey National Guard, and designated as the 102nd Cavalry Regiment. During World War II, the regiment was inducted into federal service on 16 January 1941 and later reorganized as the 102nd Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Mechanized. The unit participated in campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. After the war, the regiment underwent several reorganizations and redesignations, ultimately becoming part of the 50th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, New Jersey Army National Guard.
