Unit History
758th Tank Battalion
1940–1947 (World War II)
The 758th Tank Battalion was constituted on 13 January 1941 and activated on 1 April 1941 at Fort Knox, Kentucky. It was the first African American armored unit in the U.S. Army, formed as part of the segregated forces during World War II. The battalion was initially equipped with light tanks and trained extensively before deploying to Italy in December 1943. Assigned to support various infantry divisions, the 758th participated in the Italian Campaign, providing armored support in challenging mountainous terrain and earning campaign participation credit for Rome-Arno, North Apennines, and Po Valley. The battalion was inactivated on 22 September 1945 in Italy. Its legacy continued postwar as it was later redesignated as the 64th Tank Battalion and eventually became part of the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment.
