Activated at Fort Benning, Georgia, the regiment played a significant role in World War II, participating in major campaigns including the invasion of North Africa (Operation Torch), the Sicily campaign, and the Normandy landings. The regiment fought through France, Belgium, and into Germany, earning distinction for its actions in the breakout from Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. Following the end of hostilities in Europe, the regiment was inactivated on 25 March 1946 in Germany. 1948–1957 (Early Cold War / Korea) The 66th Armored Regiment was reactivated during the early Cold War period as part of the 2nd Armored Division. It remained stationed in Germany as part of the U.S. Army’s commitment to NATO and the defense of Western Europe. The regiment continued to train and maintain readiness during this era, contributing to the deterrence mission in Europe. 1958–1980 (Cold War / Vietnam Era) During the Cold War, the 66th Armored Regiment underwent several reorganizations and redesignations, with its battalions serving in various armored and mechanized roles within the 2nd Armored Division. The regiment’s elements participated in numerous training exercises and deployments in support of NATO operations, maintaining a forward presence in Europe throughout the period. 1980–Present (Post-Vietnam / GWOT) Elements of the 66th Armored Regiment continued to serve as part of the 2nd Armored Division until the division’s inactivation in 1995.
