555 Field Artillery Battalion 1940–1947 (World War II) The 555th Field Artillery Battalion was constituted on 5 December 1942 in the Army of the United States and activated on 15 December 1942 at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma. The battalion was assigned to the 92nd Infantry Division, a segregated African American unit known as the "Buffalo Division." During World War II, the 555th deployed to the Italian Theater, where it provided artillery support for the 92nd Infantry Division in combat operations across the North Apennines and Po Valley campaigns. The battalion played a significant role in supporting infantry advances and countering enemy positions. Following the end of hostilities in Europe, the 555th Field Artillery Battalion was inactivated on 28 November 1945 in Italy.
