Unit History
The 6th Bombardment Group was first constituted as the 3rd Observation Group on 15 August 1919 and organized on 30 September 1919 at France Field, Panama Canal Zone. It was redesignated as the 6th Group (Observation) in 1921, and later as the 6th Bombardment Group in 1922. The unit played a significant role in the defense of the Panama Canal during the interwar years and World War II. During World War II, the 6th Bombardment Group was equipped with B-17 Flying Fortresses and later B-24 Liberators, conducting antisubmarine patrols and training missions in the Caribbean and Central America. In 1944, the group was transferred to the Pacific Theater, where it was equipped with B-29 Superfortresses and participated in strategic bombing operations against Japan, including attacks on industrial targets and urban areas. The group was inactivated on 18 October 1948.
