Unit History

The 53rd Field Artillery Battalion was originally constituted on 5 July 1918 in the National Army as the 53rd Field Artillery and assigned to the 14th Division. It was organized on 10 August 1918 at Camp Custer, Michigan. The unit was demobilized on 7 February 1919 at Camp Custer following the end of World War I. The battalion was reconstituted on 24 March 1923 in the Regular Army as the 53rd Field Artillery and assigned to the 6th Division. It was later redesignated as the 53rd Field Artillery Battalion on 1 October 1940 and activated at Fort Knox, Kentucky. During World War II, the battalion served in the European Theater, participating in several campaigns.
