Unit History

The 53rd Cavalry Brigade was a unit of the United States Army National Guard. It was organized in 1921 as part of the post-World War I reorganization of the National Guard and was assigned to the 22nd Cavalry Division. The brigade was composed primarily of cavalry regiments from the states of New York and New Jersey. Its primary mission was to provide a mobile force capable of reconnaissance, security, and offensive operations in support of larger formations. The 53rd Cavalry Brigade participated in regular training exercises and maneuvers throughout the interwar period. With the advent of World War II and the changing nature of warfare, the brigade was inactivated in 1940 as the Army transitioned away from horse-mounted units to mechanized and armored forces.
