Unit History
The 508th Field Artillery Battalion was constituted on 5 July 1918 in the National Army as the 508th Field Artillery and assigned to the 85th Division. It was organized on 10 August 1918 at Camp Custer, Michigan. The unit was demobilized on 21 December 1918 at Camp Custer following the end of World War I. The battalion was later reconstituted on 24 June 1921 in the Organized Reserves as the 508th Field Artillery and again assigned to the 85th Division. It was reorganized and redesignated on 1 July 1929 as the 508th Field Artillery Battalion. The unit was ordered into active military service on 15 May 1942 and reorganized at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. During World War II, the 508th Field Artillery Battalion served as part of the 85th Infantry Division and participated in campaigns in Italy, including Rome-Arno, North Apennines, and Po Valley. After the war, the battalion was inactivated on 25 August 1945 at Camp Patrick Henry, Virginia.
