The 44th Infantry Division was originally constituted in the National Guard in 1920 and organized in 1924, with units from New Jersey and New York. The division, including its artillery units, was inducted into federal service on 16 September 1940 at Newark, New Jersey. During World War II, the 44th Division Artillery supported the division in several major campaigns in the European Theater, including the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe campaigns. After the war, the division was inactivated on 12 November 1945 at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas, and later reactivated in the National Guard before its final inactivation in 1954. Sources: Wikipedia.
