The 3rd Coast Artillery Regiment was constituted on 27 February 1924 in the Regular Army and organized on 1 July 1924 at Fort MacArthur, California. The regiment was assigned to the Harbor Defenses of Los Angeles, where it was responsible for the operation and maintenance of coastal artillery batteries designed to protect the harbor and surrounding areas from naval threats. Throughout its service, the 3rd Coast Artillery Regiment played a key role in the coastal defense system, manning fixed gun emplacements and supporting the broader mission of the Coast Artillery Corps. The regiment underwent several reorganizations and redesignations during its history, reflecting changes in coastal defense strategy and technology. Elements of the regiment remained active through World War II, after which the coastal artillery units were gradually inactivated or converted to other roles as the threat of naval attack diminished and missile technology advanced.
