Unit History

The 29th Field Artillery Battalion was originally constituted on 5 July 1918 in the National Army as the 29th Field Artillery and assigned to the 10th Division. It was organized on 10 August 1918 at Camp Funston, Kansas. The unit was demobilized on 9 February 1919 at Camp Funston following the end of World War I. The battalion was reconstituted on 24 March 1923 in the Regular Army as the 29th Field Artillery and assigned to the 4th Division. It was activated on 1 June 1940 at Fort Benning, Georgia, and later reorganized and redesignated on 1 October 1940 as the 29th Field Artillery Battalion, remaining an element of the 4th Division (later redesignated as the 4th Infantry Division). The battalion participated in major campaigns during World War II, including Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. After the war, the unit underwent several activations and inactivations, reflecting the changing needs of the U.S. Army.
