Unit History
The 243rd Coast Artillery Regiment was a unit of the United States Army organized for the purpose of harbor defense. Constituted in the Organized Reserve as the 243rd Coast Artillery (Harbor Defense) Regiment, it was allotted to the Harbor Defenses of Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. The regiment was organized in 1924 and was responsible for manning the coastal artillery batteries that protected the approaches to Narragansett Bay, a critical naval and shipping area. The 243rd Coast Artillery Regiment was part of the broader system of coastal defenses established by the United States to guard against enemy naval threats, particularly during the interwar period and World War II. The regiment was inactivated following the end of World War II as advances in military technology rendered traditional coastal artillery obsolete.
