The 22nd Armored Regiment was constituted as part of the United States Army during World War II. It was originally activated on 1 June 1940 at Fort Benning, Georgia, as the 22nd Armored Regiment, an element of the 11th Armored Division. The regiment participated in training and maneuvers throughout the United States before being reorganized and redesignated as the 22nd Tank Battalion on 20 September 1943. As part of the 11th Armored Division, the unit deployed to the European Theater of Operations, where it took part in several key campaigns, including the Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland, and Central Europe campaigns.
