Unit History

The 201st Infantry Regiment was first organized in the West Virginia National Guard as the 1st West Virginia Infantry in 1735, making it one of the oldest units in the United States Army. The regiment served in various conflicts, including the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, and both World Wars. During the Civil War, the unit was mustered into federal service as part of the Union Army. In World War I, the regiment was redesignated as the 150th Infantry and served with the 38th Division. The unit was again federalized during World War II, serving in a homeland defense role. Over the years, the regiment underwent several reorganizations and redesignations, ultimately becoming the 201st Infantry Regiment.
