Unit History
The 197th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft) was a unit of the United States Army organized to provide anti-aircraft defense. The regiment was originally constituted in the New Hampshire National Guard and federally recognized on 18 April 1921. It was organized and headquartered at Manchester, New Hampshire. The 197th was inducted into federal service on 16 September 1940 as part of the pre-World War II mobilization. During World War II, the regiment was deployed to various locations for the defense of critical installations against aerial attack. The unit underwent several reorganizations and redesignations during its service, reflecting changes in Army structure and the evolving nature of anti-aircraft warfare. After the war, the regiment was inactivated and its lineage continued through successor units in the New Hampshire Army National Guard.
