The 136th Infantry Regiment was originally constituted in the National Guard as the 2nd Minnesota Infantry and organized in 1861. The unit served in the Civil War, participating in several campaigns. It was later reorganized and redesignated as the 136th Infantry Regiment in 1917 as part of the 34th Division for service in World War I. The regiment was demobilized in 1919 following the end of the war. During World War II, the 136th Infantry was again activated and served in the Pacific Theater, participating in campaigns in New Guinea, Luzon, and the Southern Philippines. After the war, the regiment was inactivated in 1946. The 136th Infantry Regiment has a long history of service, reflecting the contributions of Minnesota’s citizen-soldiers in major conflicts.
